Szare condemn, unequivocally and absolutely, the violence being perpetuated against the civilian population in Gaza by the Israeli State. Nothing could justify the extreme barbarity which we have seen in recent weeks: targeted attacks against schools, hospitals, ambulances, the region’s only power station, and countless residential areas, all on the pretext that they may be used by Hamas, who the Israeli’s accuse of hiding behind “human shields”. It would be difficult NOT to hide behind human shields in Gaza - it is one of the most densely populated places on Earth (around 5000 people per km2, i.e. around the same as London) - meaning all civilian areas become military targets in the eyes of the IDF, leading to the mass murder of (so far) more than a thousand innocent civilians.
All this is met with “concern” from the developed nations, and nothing more. No sanctions are imposed, such as have been against Russia. People may like to think of the United States as a superpower in decline, but we can see clearly enough in the current situation how much they continue to dominate in the geopolitical arena. Their hypocrisy knows no bounds. At the same time as condemning (in the mildest possible terms, of course) Israeli air strikes against UN hospitals, they agree to give Israel $225 million in order to maintain their “Iron Dome” missile defense system.
Yet just how effective is Iron Dome? Between 2004 and 2008, 18 Israelis were killed by rocket attacks, or just over 4 per year. From 2009 up to now, with Iron Dome installed, 13 have died. This does not constitute a great difference, especially when one considers that last year, 2013, there were only 32 rocket attacks! (As compared to an average of 1700 rocket attacks per year between 2006 and 2008, before Iron Dome was installed.) So the efficiency of the Hamas rockets is absolutely without credibility. They have killed only 3 in the current war, less than one person a week, despite launching everything they have - and as we have tried to show, this is not thanks to the miraculous Iron Dome. This is because Hamas rocket attacks are an extremely poor form of warfare. They have no guidance system and often fall within Gaza itself. On the other hand, Israel has the one of the most modern (technologically speaking, if not ethically) and certainly one of the best equipped military forces in the world, all supplied by the United States.
Now let us arrive at the point: a combination of factors, including the militarization of the Israeli populace through national service, the dehumanisation of the enemy, Egypt’s bought collaboration through inaction, and the endless propaganda war being played out within Israel itself to sustain public support for the campaign, have developed into what can only be described as bloodlust. Today, in the Jerusalem Post, the main English-language Israeli newspaper, an editorial piece entitled “Why Gaza Must Go” offered the following solution: “The only durable solution requires dismantling Gaza, humanitarian relocation of the non-belligerent Arab population, and extension of Israeli sovereignty over the region.”
Szare, named after Szare Szeregi, the military wing of the Polish Scouts during the Second World War, can only be reminded of certain similar events by the Jerusalem Posts’ language. It recalls the Pabst Plan, wherein Nazi Germany planned to turn Warsaw into a German city by deporting or killing the Polish population and razing almost every building to the ground before rebuilding it as a model, “German” city. Of course, though the Pabst Plan never came to fruition, the wholesale massacre and organized genocide of the Polish Jews was very, very real, and it would only serve to teach us how pathetic we are as a species if such an odious philosophy were to fester in the minds of the children and grandchildren of the Holocaust Survivors, reshaped for a new context but substantially similar at its roots. We are not told where these 1.8 million “non-belligerent” Gazans will be relocated to, but we can be certain that they will not be afforded Israeli citizenship, thus they will be deported, in a further example of Israel’s land-grabbing policy.
The Only Solution: That all people in the so-called Holy Land, regardless of ethnicity or religion, stand up and say NO! to apartheid and fight for a new status quo, working towards a secular State which is not defined by its religious or ethnic character. Szare stand for a United Israel-Palestine, where everybody is free to live in peace without fear of oppression and no one group dominates any other. To those that laugh: Remember that before 1945, war was an almost constant feature of diplomatic relations between European States. It does not appear likely that a war between them will happen soon. To discount the possibility that the same may not be achieved in the Middle East is to admit defeat as a species.
Free Gaza! Down with the Occupation! Down with the Blockade! Down with the murder of innocent civilians! Down with the racist Israeli State!
